How Does it Work?

Eastern View:

Acupuncture primarily works by manipulating and controlling the flow of Qi. Qi (pronounced chee) can best be described as your life force. It is the energetic/ vibratory phenomena in nature that drives the body on a daily basis. Two very common terms also used in the description of traditional Chinese medicine are the Yin and the Yang. They are two opposite forces working synergistically to maintain a natural balance in the body. If there is an imbalance of the two, the flow of Qi is blocked and it is believed that disease and all other ailments come about as a result of this imbalance. This imbalance can occur as a result of injury, poor diet, emotional distress, excessive work habits, weather change and many other poor lifestyle habits. Acupuncture works to restore this imbalance of yin and yang. By diagnosing energetic imbalances, re- establishing free flow of qi in the body and maintaining equilibrium between yin and yang, Acupuncture can relieve disharmony in both a natural and safe method. By stimulating points with hair thin needles on various channels located throughout the body, Acupuncturists work to regulate the proper

Acupuncture points have been designated in the western world as areas of designated electrical sensitivity. Inserting acupuncture needles at these points stimulates various sensory receptors that, in turn, stimulate nerves. These particular nerve impulses are transmitted to the hypothalamic-pituitary system at the base of the brain. The hypothalamus-pituitary glands are responsible for releasing neurotransmitters and endorphins. These are particularly important in the body's ability to maintain pain levels. Studies have estimated that endorphins are 200 times more potent than morphine. Endorphins have also been found to stabilize the normal function of the hormonal system. This is why acupuncture not only works well for pain management but menstrual irregularities, and infertility as well. Recent studies have also found that Acupuncture has the ability to regulate serotonin production in the brain, thus regulating human temperament. This is the basis on which Acupuncture may be used to treat depression and other mental/emotional disorders. Some of the physiological effects observed throughout the body include increased circulation, decreased inflammation, relief from pain, relief of muscle spasms and increased T-cell count (cells responsible for stimulating the immune system).
